February 2026 Newsletter

Greetings, CTU Members and Friends –

Our theme for the month of February will be the Ancient Celtic religion, commonly known as Celtic Paganism, which was the religion of the ancient Celtic peoples of Europe. Celtic paganism was one of a larger group of polytheistic Indo-European religions beginning in the Late Bronze Age (c. 1200–900 BCE). Their beliefs include many gods and goddesses, and sacred spaces, both outdoors and inside their homes. Their mythology promoted their values of deep respect for the environment (rivers, trees, mountains), honouring seasonal cycles through festivals, hospitality, and a belief in the soul's immortality and the Otherworld. See below for some of our speakers and topics on this theme (thanks to Wikipedia, Google and ChatGPT for this summary!)

More exciting news! After discussion with several members and an assessment of the negative impact of hybrid services, we have decided to try some new formats and locations starting in February. Therefore, our one in-person service will be on the second Sunday, 8 February. The other three Sundays will be online only. Then we are excited to explore some new locations as well in the coming months. Stay tuned for more information.

Lastly, in March we will be hosting a Pan African Unitarian conference here in Cape Town. Please diarise a dinner with everyone on Thursday 19th March, and a big lunch on Sunday 22nd March! We will need everyone’s help to care for our fellow Unitarians coming from several different African countries. And we’ll host special speakers to give us inspiration and support. If you’d like to be part of the planning committee or help in a specific area, please let me know. It’ll be a fun and joyful way to celebrate Unitarianism as it is practiced in different parts of the African continent.

With love and light,
Nima

January 2026 Newsletter

Greetings, CTU Members and Friends –

This year, 19-22 March, we will be hosting a Pan African Unitarian conference here in Cape Town. Please diarise these important dates!

This Ministry team has suggested we explore the diverse religions in more depth this year. Therefore, we will start in January with Indigenous wisdom. What are the similarities that can be found in Indigenous traditions all over the world? See the Sunday services for more detail.

Our beloved and long-time members, Gur Mouanga and Fred Benning, need our help!  Any donation will be greatly appreciated. Details are at the bottom of our newsletter.

Lastly, following an independent investigation, Nolu was dismissed in December. We are grateful for her service to our community for the past four years, and we are sad to see her go. An update would be available shortly.

With love and light,
Nima

4 January, Animism: The world is alive. We begin the year by exploring animism—the ancient understanding that the world around us is alive, relational, and sacred. This service invites us to slow down and listen for wisdom in land, water, and everyday life. What changes when we treat the Earth not as an object, but as a living presence?

11 January, Listening to the Ancestors: African Indigenous Wisdom. Drawing on African Indigenous traditions, including the wisdom of the Sangoma path, this service explores the role of ancestors as guides, memory-keepers, and moral companions. We reflect on what it means to live in relationship with those who came before us. Healing, in this worldview, is never only individual—it is communal..

18 January, Walking Gently on the Earth: Indigenous Ecological Wisdom. Indigenous cultures around the world teach that the land is not owned, but belonged to. This service reflects on Earth as teacher, kin, and sacred responsibility. We ask how learning to listen again might reshape the way we live on this planet.

25 January, the Circle of Wisdom: What Indigenous Traditions Share. We close the month by weaving together the shared threads of Indigenous wisdom found across cultures. Connection, community, reverence for the Earth, and cyclical time emerge as enduring human truths. These values invite us to remember what modern life has encouraged us to forget.

December 2025 Newsletter

Greetings, CTU Members and Friends –

Please read our two donation requests for Fred and Gur at the end of this newsletter. I hope you might consider giving a small (or large!) donation to support two of our most wonderful and dedicated members.

On Sunday 7 December, we have our Festive Service. NOTE THAT THE TIME FOR THIS SERVICE IS 6 PM IN THE EVENING. NO MORNING SERVICE WILL BE HELD THIS SUNDAY. I hope you will join us to sing Christmas Carols and find some ground beneath our feet.

We will also have a special hybrid (online and in person) Finance meeting at 5 pm this Sunday 7th December, where Leigh will share an update on the progress made on our financial statements and our budget for next year. Contact me for the separate Zoom link and the excel spreadsheet that will be reviewed.

Lastly, as we end this year, I know many in our community are struggling with what it means to be part of the Cape Town Unitarians. Being part of a community can be challenging, because we humans have different upbringings, cultures, perspectives, opinions, judgments and needs. We don’t always get the balance right of how best to be together. And yet, in spite of these challenges, I personally believe in the power of spiritual community to transform us in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. I am in the process of meeting with many members and friends of our community. If you would like to meet with me one-on-one, please let me know!

Sunday Services

Please note: All Sunday services in December will be hybrid.

All services will start at 10:30 am SA time

(except the 7 December which starts at 6 pm)

7 December, Annual Festive Service. Join us at 6 pm for our annual Festive Service. Garth will be playing our organ for us, and we’ll sing Christmas Songs and reflect upon Peace from different perspectives.

14 December, Compassion and Boundaries. We’ll explore how compassion and boundaries can coexist.

21 December, Summer Solstice. Finding our grounding at this time of year. We’ll welcome some Pagan rituals and connect more deeply to nature and the natural rhythms of the earth.

28 December, Burning Bowl.  At the end of each year, we reflect on what hurts, concerns, situations, emotions, thoughts we might be hanging on to, that might not be serving us. We will take the time to write down on a piece of paper whatever it might be. Then we will burn the paper to symbolically let go of what is holding us back, in order to start the new year with a fresh perspective.
