Greetings CTU members and friends,

In February, our theme will be “Beloved Community.” How can we work together to build a supportive community that bonds a diverse group of individuals? In keeping with this theme, I’m delighted that we have several people who will be officially joining the Cape Town Unitarians as members on the 7th of February. If you are interested in membership information, please contact me.

With light and love,

Rev. Nima

UPCOMING SUNDAY TOPICS

CapeTown_tobias-reich-JE56S222Rw0-unsplash.jpg

7 February - New Members Sunday: Join us as we celebrate our new members and explore our theme of Beloved Community. What can we do to cultivate and nurture our community? How can we be in relationship with each other in a way that encourages and inspires us?

14 February - An 8th Principle? Bring your perspective to help us explore this whether or not we need to add a principle addressing the inequities in our world. The Unitarians in the USA are considering this new principle: “We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.”

21 February - Health Equity in the Time of COVID and Beyond: COVID-19 has exposed the weaknesses and inequalities that have existed in health systems globally. In South Africa, the Health Justice Initiative (HJI) has been vocal in raising awareness to these issues and also calling for real change to promote true health equity, with a particular emphasis on addressing racial and gender inequalities. How can we better understand this issue and help to promote true health equity within our society?

28 February - LGBT+ in the South African Context: In 2017, the SA Institute of Race Relations (IRR) indicated that in Africa, tolerance for "homosexuals and other groups" ranked well below tolerance for differences in ethnicity, religion, immigrants, and even those with HIV. Writer/activist Siya Khumalo will join us to discuss some of these issues. He has written on topics concerning religion, politics and sex in various SA news media outlets. He is the author of ‘You Have To Be Gay To Know God’ (Kwela Books, 2018), which won the Desmond Tutu-Gerrit Brand Literary Prize.
