Recycle, Help the Environment and Raise Funds for Our Community

April 26, 2023 Cape Town Unitarians

Cele recycling bottles at Pick ‘n Pay in Kenilworth Center (KC) that she gathered from a local business. “I was at KC to donate plasma and asked if they had any empty bottles because our church—Cape Town Unitarians—is participating in a recycling program and I volunteered to help collect and deliver recycling on behalf of CTU,” Cele says. “I was amazed at the generosity of the staff for allowing me to take away so many bottles. Keeping plastic out of landfills and oceans is such an important part of looking after the environment.”

Bring us your talents, your treasures, your time—and now even your (recyclable) trash!

Thanks to Cele and Hans, we are launching an initiative to recycle items at Imagined Earth reverse vending machines in exchange for cash, airtime and vouchers via the Imagined Earth app. Each item is worth a different amount according to its size and composition. Our goal is to help the environment while raising funds for our community.

How to Participate

  1.  Gather all your recyclable items into one bag.

  2. Download the Imagined Earth app onto your phone.

  3. Use the app to scan your recyclables and check whether or not they items are accepted at Imagined Earth reverse vending machines.

  4. Use the app to find the machine closest to you.

  5. Go to the machine with your bag of recyclables.

  6. Enter the Cape Town Unitarians phone number +27-69-437-8926 so that our community receives the credit for your recyclables.

  7. Walk away feeling great that you’ve helped the environment and CTU.

You can also leave your recyclables at a Sunday service and then the social justice team will take care of them.

We would love to recycle at least 50 items per month as a community. We will report our progress in a couple months. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Hans on WhatsApp at +27-72-127-6497 or Cele on WhatsApp at + 27-82-433-8815. You can also email us at community@capetownunitarians.org.

Anybody in our community who is interested in social justice issues can join the Cape Town Unitarians social justice WhatsApp group by contacting Cele on WhatsApp at + 27-82-433-8815. The group shares events and activities happening in Cape Town.
